Dr COHEN has studied a district on the borders of Karnataka withTamil Nadu Tamil Nadu(tăm`əl nä`d), formerly Madras(mədrăs`, mədräs`), state (2001 provisional pop. and AP. His report is an exhaustive and systematicdescription with particular attention to the sculptures and theiriconography. He argues the art-historical cases for their chronology andthe result is valuable for revealing a coherent corpus, which hesummarizes succinctly. He prefaces the details with a summary of Nolambadynastic history and, with thorough reference to previous scholarship, attempts to reconstruct the art's historical context. This ispainstaking and refreshing scholarship from both the field and thelibrary. However, many more drawings are needed and the photographs, while useful, are poorly printed.
