For teachers seeking Professional Certification, theportfolio offers an alternative for presenting written documentation oftheir professional experiences, activities and accomplishments that willfulfill the MTNA Professional Certification Standards, once the initialrequirements are satisfied. The set of five standards can be obtainedfrom the Certification website at www.mtnacertification.org or byrequest from MTNA national headquarters. The guidelines for preparing,submitting and evaluating a certification portfolio have been developedby the NCC during the past several months. Certification candidates electing the portfolio option will berequired to follow the instructions and specifications in theguidelines. These may be found on the certification website or obtainedby mail, upon request from the MTNA national office by calling (888)512-5278 or e-mailing mtnacertification@mtna.org. The materials submitted in the portfolio should reflect thecandidate's professional preparation, teaching practices andability to operate a successful, professional studio or classroom. Thecandidate's submissions also must demonstrate activities promotingprofessional involvement, including partnership development withstudents, families, peers and the community. The fees for submitting theportfolio for evaluation are comparable to those for the finalcertification examination. The time constraints In law, time constraints are placed on certain actions and filings in the interest of speedy justice, and additionally to prevent the evasion of the ends of justice by waiting until a matter is moot. are clearly explained inthe guidelines. The NCC and the MTNA Board of Directors expect the certificationportfolio option will appeal to independent studio teachers as well ascollege and university faculty who wish to become professionallycertified, but may find the examination process too restrictive inregards to time, travel and so forth.
