Shingle Shaker Rag is a terrific new piano solo The piano is often used to provide harmonic accompaniment to a voice or other instrument. However, solo parts for the piano can be found in some musical styles. These can take the form of a section in which the piano is heard more prominently than other instruments, or in which the piano from Glenda Austin. Described as "later-elementary to early-intermediate," it sounds considerably more difficult. This nostalgic-feeling rag features lots of syncopation syncopation(sĭng'kəpā`shən, sĭn'–)[New Gr.,=cut off ], in music, the accentuation of a beat that normally would be weak according to the rhythmic division of the measure. and chromaticism chromaticismIn music, the use of all 12 tones, especially for heightened expressivity. A standard key or mode principally employs 7 tones, leaving 5 tones for discretionary use. Use of all 12 tones in a given piece increased in the 18th and 19th centuries. . The melody spins back and forth with whole and half steps, while the bass punctuates with its own march, requiring the pianist to pay particular heed to legato and staccato markings. Shingle Shaker Rag is an unusually infectious piece I'm anxious to use with my own students.
