Southern Division. (MTNA Division News). There have been many interesting happenings in our division lately. Thanks to all who wrote in to tell me about them. I like to keep abreast of what is going on and rely on your input. Keep those cards and letters coming! Georgia MTA (GMTA "Great minds think alike." See digispeak. ) awarded its first annual Teacher of the Year Award at its state convention to Betty Nolting, NCTM NCTM National Council of Teachers of MathematicsNCTM Nationally Certified Teacher of MusicNCTM North Carolina Transportation MuseumNCTM National Capital Trolley MuseumNCTM Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage . Congratulations, Betty, for your dedication to the music profession over the years. Also, four GMTA members were honored for membership of fifty years or more. These are Daisy Aukerman, Frank Crockett, Despy Karlas and Betty Folger, NCTM. South Carolina MTA had a choral work, "Gazing Up at the Stars," performed at its November convention. It was commissioned from Mark Kilstofte (2002 Prix de Rome Prix de Romein full Grand Prix de RomeArt scholarship awarded by the French government from 1663 to 1968. Established by Louis XIV and Charles Le Brun, it enabled young French painters, sculptors, architects, engravers, and musicians to study in Rome. winner). Likewise, Mississippi MTA had a commissioned work performed at its forty-eighth annual convention, "Variations and Toccata toccata(təkä`tə, tō–)[Ital.,=touched], type of musical composition. Early examples were written for various instruments, but the best-known form of toccata originated about the beginning of the 17th cent. on a Theme of Paganini" for piano by James Sclater. I was fortunate to be able to hear this exciting work in person. These commissions are among the most important activities of our state associations.
