Six States Eligible for WIA Incentive Awards. In May, the U.S. Department of Labor, in collaboration Working together on a project. See collaborative software. with theDepartment of Education, announced that six states were eligible toapply for Workforce Investment Act (WIA WIAabbr.wounded in action ) incentive awards. The sixstates had until June June:see month. 18 to submit their applications for the incentivefunding to the Department of Labor. The states qualified for a share of the $10.08 million availablebecause they had taken the lead on implementing provisions of the WIAone year ahead of the full implementation date. In order to qualify, astate must have exceeded performance levels agreed to by thesecretaries, governor and state education officer for outcomes instate-operated employment and adult education programs. Goals includedplacement after training, retention in employment and improvement inliteracy literacyAbility to read and write. The term may also refer to familiarity with literature and to a basic level of education obtained through the written word.
