As one who is in constant search for quality clarinet duo music to be used within the private studio as well as the concert hall, I am confident that this excellent edition of Jean Xavier Lefevre's (1763-1829) Duos Opus 9 is destined destine?tr.v. destined, destining, destines1. The eleven sets of Duos for two clarinets by Lefevre (according to according toprep.1. As stated or indicated by; on the authority of: according to historians.2. Fetis) were composed in the early decades of the nineteenth century during which the popularity of the wind instrument virtuosi in Europe reached its height. Often, the soloists commissioned popular composers to write concert pieces or concertos for them, with the stipulation An agreement between attorneys that concerns business before a court and is designed to simplify or shorten litigation and save costs.During the course of a civil lawsuit, criminal proceeding, or any other type of litigation, the opposing attorneys may come to an agreement that they were granted exclusive performing rights Performing rights are the right to perform music in public. Many of the virtuosi went even further by composing their own music that would enable them to demonstrate their technical prowess. Lefevre's contribution to the era of the virtuoso clarinetist was as an orchestral performer at the Opera in Paris, a professor at the Paris Conservatoire conservatoireNouna school of music [French]Conservatory, Conservatoirea school of advanced studies, usually in one of the fine arts, hence, the students and professors collectively; , and as a composer of six Clarinet Concertos, several concertante Con`cer`tan´ten. 1. (Mus.) A concert for two or more principal instruments, with orchestral accompaniment. Also adjectively; as, concertanteparts s>. works, a Methode for clarinet (for which he is best remembered) and a number of chamber pieces including the sets of Duos for two clarinets. The Duos are housed in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris in an 1810 edition by Naderman. Characteristic of all of the Lefevre Duos, each are in two movements and are equal in terms of melodic interest and difficulty between the two parts. The Opus 9 Duos were dedicated to Lefevre's friend and colleague, Rodolphe, a horn player. Great attention to detail by acclaimed clarinetist and editor Georgina Dobree sets this edition aside from other nineteenth-century duos currently available. Within the introduction Dobree writes, "... both duos have been unashamedly unashamed?adj.Feeling or showing no remorse, shame, or embarrassment:unasham edited in anticipation that the parts might be studied individually before the players meet." By doing so, Dobree has taken all of the guesswork out of the ornamentation ornamentationIn music, the addition of notes for expressive and aesthetic purposes. For example, a long note may be ornamented by repetition or by alternation with a neighboring note (“trill”); a skip to a nonadjacent note can be filled in with the intervening by providing her own qualified interpretation of the original markings. Perhaps the most valuable contribution to these duos is the brackets provided, used to identify the more prominent passages within each clarinet part and score. In the original Naderman edition, the markings are inconsistent and confusing to the player, but after careful scrutiny of sections in a similar style, Dobree has simplified the reading of the music by maintaining consistent markings throughout the composition. Although the more prominent passage is obvious to the more advanced musician, this current edition makes the composition more accessible to the younger player, and therefore, a more valuable edition to own. This work is highly accessible to advanced high school students as the clarinet range does not extend beyond a written F above the staff, and is equally appropriate for college students as sight-reading material within the private lesson setting, as well as for performance in the concert hall. Meticulously edited with fine attention to detail in terms of phrasing, articulation, ornamentation and melodic content, these duos are a fine example of early nineteenth-century style that will be enjoyed by clarinetists for years to come.
